NUI Galway Rowing Club is one of the most successful clubs in the University and indeed in Irish rowing. In the last decade, they have captured numerous National Championship titles in the Mens Senior 4+ and 4- categories, in addition to Seniors 8's, Inter 8's, 4's, Novice 8's and Novice 4's.
The 08/09 season held great success for the club, winning intervarsity championships and national championships with womens novice 4+ and 8+ and senior 8+ and 4- (as well as best overall club at the Champs). The 09/10 season again saw intervarsity success at novice level with the mens 4+ and back to back wins at the national champioships with the senior 8+ and 4-.
Their members have also represented Ireland on an International levels at various events, most notably Alan Martin, Cormac Folan and James Wall who were members of Ireland's Heavyweight 4-over the past few seasons, racing in World Cup Regattas. Alan Martin and Cormac Folan, along with two other Irish rowers, qualified the boat for the Beijing Olympics at the World Championships in Munich in 2007. Cormac Folan managed to retain his seat and raced in the Olympics in 2008. 2009 saw Intermediate Rower Niall Kenny represent Ireland at the U23 World Championship achieving a silver medal in the lightweight 4x. Rowing Intervarsities are held at the NRC (National Rowing Centre) Farran Wood, Co. Cork.
4 consecutive Wiley Cups for N.U.I.G. Boat Club (intervarsity rowing championships 2003 – 2006, N.U.I. Galway brought home both the Wiley (for Senior Mens) and Bank of Ireland Cup (for Women).
In 2009 the Club won Mens Intermediate coxed fours and Men's Intermediate doubles.
2010 saw the Mens Novice coxed four and Men's Senior Double taking a varsity pot.
NUIG BC travelled down with over 35 athletes plus 6 coaches and was competitive in many divisions both male and female.
The club won 3 Irish pennants, a great haul that included both scholarship students and those who took up the sport this year. The men won the novice 4s championship from a strong filed of 19 entries. They won the final with a dominant performance from start to finish. Coached by Phil O Connell and Dave Mannion, this crew included the clubs captain Eoin Keating and two 1st year novices. An impressive result for those new to the sport. A Mens inter pair narrowly lost out on winning their event by the smallest of margins. Also coached by Phil and Dave these rowers can now join up with the novice Mens 4 to make competitive crews at intermediate level next year.
The Womens side of the club won 2 championships at 2 divisions, an unprecedented event. In a similar fashion to the Mens novice 4, the Womens inter 4 dominated their final and won comfortably from a strong queen’s boat. Stroked by veteran Cliona Hurst this was a polished performance. The Womens novice 4 won earlier that day by a tight margin in an enthralling final. They fought back from 3rd place to win by half a length from a strong junior crew. The Womens coaches are Padraic bracken, rob and Sinéad o Connell and Enda Gaffney. the inter Womens 8 were very close to winning their final too and pulled out a fine performance by coming 4th in the Womens senior final later the same day. This augurs well for the future of Womens rowing, who earlier in the year had picked up an intervarsity pennant in the Womens 8s event. NUIG remains one of the most successful clubs in the country and is hoping to attract more rowers both experienced and new on the back of these wins.
