The tennis club in NUIG has been growing consistently over the last 3 years. We accommodate a hug number of students from those who have never lifted a racket before to those who have years of tennis experience. The club offers beginner training and is proud to have numerous experienced student coaches involved. There is an aim to raise tennis awareness in the west of Ireland, an area where tennis often takes a back seat.
The club has an active social scene with numerous nights out each term. Many new friendships have been made though the club and this trend will continue for years to come.
The NUIG tennis club has a long history dating back to the 60s (if not further). In recent years the club went quiet before re-emerging in 2007 and taking off once again.
In 2007 we reestablished ourselves as intervarsity competitors and have continued to do this to date. The club activity has grown in recent years with trips away to play other universities.
This year we are proud to be hosting the national tennis intervarsities for the first time in 7 years. This is the biggest college tennis event in the country and over 120 people compete each year. There are separate teams of guys and girls of 6. The event will be run from the 23rd of February to the 26th and promises to be a great week.
This week over 100 tennis competitors and enthusiasts will descend upon the Galway Lawn Tennis Club to compete for the 2011 Tennis Intervarsities. The four day tournament which pitches Ireland’s best young college students against each other begins on Wednesday morning and play will continue throughout the week until the finals on Saturday at 12pm.
Home to Tennis Ireland and the reigning men and women’s champions DCU will be out to defend their four year unbeaten stretch in the competition. With NUIG entering teams in both sections there is keen interest from all involved to build on previous success’s and push on. In 2010 the women’s team collected the Plate to add to this re-emerging clubs growing reputation. The event is open for spectators each day and those who attend will not be let down by the quality of high standard play and lively banter which make this event a must in each players calendar each year.
While there may be the odd thrown racket of frustration or roar of celebration there is no doubt that by Saturday lunch time everyone will leave with great memories. This marks a huge achievement for the NUIG Tennis club which was re-established just over three years ago. Supported by a small group of dedicated students who keep the club running week to week while juggling hectic schedule of college life.
Special mention must go to NUIG captain Neil Mcloughlin and Marion Hanley for all their work in helping this tournament to be arranged and also to the Galway Lawn Tennis Club for allowing us the use of their club.
