Hi all, Thanks for checking out one of NUIG's largest clubs. Since the relocation to the new 12-court sports facility of the Kingfisher we currently have over 400 members! The badminton club is a great outlet for taking a break from your studies and meeting new people of course. We provide a coach for both beginners and advanced players- and don't worry if you have never shaken hands with a racquet...if you just take the first step we will help you with the rest. Also there are numerous tournaments to enter during the academic year such as annual team events including intervarsities and the Irish ISBT, county championships and Connaught championships. We also will be running our very own Galway Student Badminton Tournament with players from all over Ireland and further beyond taking part. Promises to be a brilliant weekend! But it's not all about competing! Many members are satisfied with friendlies during training and club nights out are a great way to make friends. The Club is open to only students of NUIG. New members to the club, from beginners to advanced, are always welcome. Just email the club, or drop in to the Kingfisher Sports Centre during training and pick up a racket! Beware- badminton is a highly addictive sport!
Competitive badminton has undergone a huge revival in the past few years, seeing the clubs introduction to the county leagues, the Irish ISBT and our very own annual doubles and mixed tournament as well as our continued involvement in the Intervarsities (which we hosted in 2005). Members also compete in the county championships and Connaught championships.
NUIG teams have competed very well in the Irish Intervarsities reaching the quarter finals over the last few years. We also compete and are very successfyl in div. 2 county league competitions over the past few years. Club members also picked up a number of prizes across all categories at the Irish ISBT last year, as well as excelling in both county and Connacht championships. We also travel to Aberdeen, Norway and Holland for ISBTs.
2005 saw NUIG badminton club host a very successful Intervarsity competition, with our own team reaching the quarter finals. This was our second year in a row qualifying for the cup, having won the plate competition in 2003. This year, the competition will be hosted by University of Limerick from 17th to the 21st of March, and we hope to go even further!
The Galway County Mixed League finals took place last Saturday in Galway Lawn Tennis Club. Twelve teams took part in the finals across the 6 divisions, in the premier event NUIG defeated GLTC to capture the Division 2 title. Galway Lawn Tennis Club were hoping to get off to a good start but it was NUIG that won the early matches and in the end ran out winners on a score line of 4-1. One of the closest finals was in Division 3, where Oranmore took the championship against Claregalway in the final match. This was an epic battle with last year’s runners up Oranmore staging a great come back to claim victory over a strong Claregalway side.
In Division 4, Cortoon proved too strong for an experienced Loughrea side, winning on a scoreline of 5-2. Having won an All-Ireland last year, this Cortoon team will be hoping to repeat the feat in the coming weeks and going on this performance they should go very close. In the Division 5 final GLTC beat Loughrea 4-1 which featured some entertaining games of badminton. This Loughrea team should learn from this experience and be favourites to win the title next year. While GLTC will no doubt be a major threat to the established Division 4 teams next season.
In Division 6, last year’s beaten finalists Furbo captured the title with a very close victory over a young GLTC side 4-3. This was a very tight affair with experience just shading it on the day for the Furbo side. GLTC will be disappointed to lose the final but can take some heart from the way their badminton has developed throughout the year. In Division 7 Letterfrack overcame Ardrahan to capture the title. This victory brought great cheers from their large following on the night and big things are expected from this team in the coming years. Ardrahan although disappointed will be back next year and will gain hugely from the experience.
After all matches had completed, refreshments and hot food were served upstairs. Chairperson Sheila Noone thanked the committee, players and our hosts, GLTC, for making the day such a success after another season of growth for Galway badminton. The presentation of prizes followed, and each team captain said a few words thanking their opponents and supporters.
The results of the finals were:
