Training has started again for the U21 and Juniors. It takes place every Tuesday and Thursdays, in Dangan (changing rooms 5 and 6) on the pitch for 6pm. New players are always welcome.
The current under 21s setup is progressing rapidly with a recent amalgamation with Corinthians RFC under the guidance of Paulie Donnellan, who has previously led Corinthains sides to AIL success, and Bartley Fannin, former forwards coach of Ireland U18 world cup champions. This coaching staff brings great experience, discipline and structure to this newly formed team. The team also benfits from their own Fitness and Conditioning Coach, Alan Quin, who works with the team on the training pitch and in the Kingfisher Elite Training Room to ensure the players reach optimum physical condition. The amalgamation with the u21's opens a door for players who wish to play Senior Rugby with Corinthians, should they be of Senior standard. The Junior Team has also had their coaching panel refreshed with Pete Smalls, former Cornish Pirates player, and Justin Conboy, a former Corinthians player. The juniors train with the u21s and able to dip into the pool of talent in the U21s. Both teams are managed by Dr. Mike O'Mahony and Tony Hall who hope to guide the teams to success in this exciting year for the club.
Ollscoil na hEireann Gaillimh RFC (UCG) has a long and proud history of Rugby in Galway. Since co-founding the IRFU in 1874 the club has won more Connacht Cups than any other club in the province. Over its many successful years at senior rugby the club has contributed numerous players to international university sides, and at international level, 10 college players have been selected to play for their country, 4 while still members of this club, perhaps the most successful among them Ciaran Fitzgerald (Irish and Lions captain). In the 93/94 season, the club made history in becoming the first club to win the Connacht U20 Cup three times in a row. In doing this it also became the club with the highest number of U20 Cup wins. Together with the same record at senior level this now means that UCG has succeeded in winning more Connacht cups than any other club at all levels.

Ballinasloe 17 ... NUIG 0...
Sunday, 16th October 2011.
NUIG have yet to convert hard graft to winning points as they succumbed to their third defeat this season. However, the latest outing provided plenty of high points produced from some outstanding phases of play. Early pressure from a big Ballinasloe pack wasn’t converted to points as the College’s 1st XV’s defense stood firm, a testament to the hard work put in on the training pitch by coaches Johnny O’Connor and Adrian Flavin.
Missing several frontliners in the pack, the College scrum creaked under pressure but the lively back line kept the students in the game. Big carries from the outstanding Fergus Moyles, rampaging Tiago Trindade and aggressive Richie Bernie complemented the slick work of the backline with linebreaks from Matthew Kavanagh and Flavian Picazo, as well as former Ballinasloe man Rob Ahern who lined out at fullback.
Ballinasloe scored their first try 15minutes in when an overlap left space out wide but the home side’s Rob O’Beirn was unable to convert the try. Indeed Ballinasloe’s fabled kicker had a shocker with the boot, missing 4 penalties in the 1st half alone. This left the half time score at 5-0 with College unlucky not to get on the scoreboard.
NUIG were dealt a double blow when 5 minutes into the second half star prop Andrew Kelly had to retire with a shoulder injury, with captain Luke Murphy forced off with an ankle injury only minutes later. Concluding a bizarre series of events, Ben Purceval was sin-binned for an alleged kick and with both props off the field and the replacements used the referee inexplicably refused to allow the visitors to replace their second prop. This left NUIG with 13 players on the pitch for 10 minutes and while Purceval returned having served his ‘sentence’ with the scrums uncontested, College were not permitted to return to 15 players. Ballinasloe made the extra men count and it wasn’t long before they scored their second and third tries though NUIG’s impressive defense denied them a 4 try bonus point.
NUIG now face Loughrea in the 5th Round of the Connacht Junior League on the 23rd October.
