The squash club meets every week on Wednesdays in the Galway Lawn Tennis Club, there's training for all levels with drill and matches, all organised by our resident coaches. Come along between 7:30 and 9:00pm, we can provide you with a racquet if you don't have one of your own, so you really have no excuse. Even if you've never played before, just let the coach know and he'll be more than happy to get you started. There are players of all levels at training sessions so you'll get a great game no matter what your skill level.
We have a ladder system for people to challenge one another. If you would like more information or to be added to the ladder, email the club at squash@clubs.nuigalway.ie
Squash was ranked the healthiest sport by Forbes magazine, and an hour of squash can burn up to 1000 calories. It helps that it's a lot of fun to play too.
Intervarsaties 2012- Galway Lawn Tennis Club- Ladies A- 1st place Mens B- 1st place-Mens C- 1st place
Intervarsities 2011 - Queens Belfast - Mens Team = 4th place (B Category)
The NUIG Squash Club, which was given a new lease of life by an energetic and enthusiastic committee in September 2010 is going from strength to strength. This year has seen the addition of a second night of training each week, during which the club is trained by former professional player and world number 30, Canadian born Alana Miller.
At the 2010 Intervarsities, NUIG fielded its first teams for a number of years and had a successful competion. The mens team emerged from the league stage of the contest, beating a strong Queens University team on the way only to lose in the 3rd place playoff to RCSI to claim a very respectable 4th in the B category. The ladies team also performed well, coming 3rd overall. NUIG have also accepted the responsibility of hosting the 2011 Intervarsity competition, which will take place during the second semester.
2010 also saw the inception of a new competition, dubbed the Squash Invitationals, which consists of an annual match between UCC Squash Club and NUIG. In the first competition last year, a cohort from NUIG travelled to UCC and defeated a strong Cork team to take home the trophy.
This year it's NUIG's turn to host the competition and it will do so on November 5th. The Galway Lawn Tennis Club will play host to an enlarged tournament with two mens teams and a ladies team from both colleges competing to win the title. Matches will begin at 1pm on the 5th. Students are welcome to attend the competition and cheer on Galways representatives.
The tournament coincides nicely with World Squash Day taking place on the same day, which aims to promote the fitness and agility benefits of the sport to women all over the world.
Training will commene Wednesday 10th October at 7:30-9:00pm in Galway Lawn Tennis Club - Open to everyone
