Hello and welcome to NUIG Surf Club! We prize ourselves on encouraging surfers of every level to get into the water, have fun and make friends. We cater for surfers of all abilites, from complete beginners to those competing at national level. We offer regular day trips to Strandhill and Fanore, where beginners can learn to surf with Irish Surfing Association qualified instructors. Our weekend trips to Achill Island, Lahinch, Bundoran and Sligo offer beginners and chargers alike a chance to surf in new places, make new friends, and party till dawn! Lessons, competitions, games and shenanigans... For those keen to surf during the week, the Surf section of the SIN message boards is a great place to meet other people willing to share the cost of an early morning surf trip to Co.Clare. The club provides boards and suits, which can be borrowed from our equipment officer. In order to take out Club gear, you must have taken lessons with an ISA qualified instructor, and be surfing with a competent surfer. Morocco anyone? last year the club brought 15 people to Taghazout in Agadir. The trip was all inclusive; accomodation, lessons, the works. The trip was a huge success so this year we are going to do it again, but this time on a much bigger scale so start packing! Surfers from the club frequently travel independently to destinations such as New Zealand, Australia, Indonesia, Costa Rica, Mexico, Samoa, California. If you are looking for someone to travel with, or advice about surfing abroad, look no further. This year we are expanding the club to provide more for the advanced surfers with meetings and get togethers every few weeks and small group trips to higher performance waves where we will video tape you surfing so that you can get an outside perspective of your style and where you need to improve as well as get advice from your peers. We are really excited about this as it is a great way to speed up your progression and maybe get more people competing in the intervarsities and regional contests. We are national Intervarsity Champions for five years running, and this year we are co-hosting the championship with University of Ulster, Colerainein in Bundoran in February 2011. That is a taster of the surf club but the best way of finding out more is to meet us in person on clubs day or our weekly meetings on wednesdays at 8pm in am150, in the arts millenium building. John Barrett, Surf Club Captain
In 2001 the Surf club was officially recognized by the University thanks to the work Tom Flanigan put in. However membership remained low and most members had their own surf boards. The club only had two surf boards for beginner use. These surf boards are famous for surviving after being driven over in France and for surviving a house fire and are now held in the surf club museum. Despite lack of funding the surf club committee ( Paddy Tom and Tom Walsh ) held intense meetings where they would discuss the future of the club and organize weekends away. From these humble pioneers the Club has grown and prospered into a hugely well organised and successful global conglomerate; boasting property, oil wells and worldwide legions of loyal minions amongst its assets.

Want to try something new, get fit and make new friends? Or even drop words like ‘cowabunga’ and ‘gnarley’ into normal conversation? NUI Galway’s friendly and local surf club is definetely the club for you. They are six time intervarsity champions and are the biggest club on campus with over 450 members. This year, they have ambitious plans to make the club even more extraordinary with a paced social calendar already underway. They have a number of upcoming events that will entice you to come along and enjoy the ambience. All members young and old are welcome to their meetings which are held every Wednesday at 8pm in the O’Flaherty Theatre on the concourse.
Currently, the club is arranging their annual trip away, this year Portugal is on the horizon. So, if you are in need of an escape from those January blues, a week of sun, surf, swells and shenanigans is just the ticket.
