GAA round up in college
Well done to the Fresher A hurlers who won their second league game with a hard earned 1-17 to 1-15 win over DIT in Dangan this afternoon. Their remaining games are against St Pats and UCD which will be played within the next three weeks. Congratulations to the Division four ladies football team who defeated GMIT in round 2 of the league on a 6-10 to 4-8 in GMIT recently.
Dooley dazzles as NUIGalway ease past DIT
Senior Div 2 hurling league rd 1 NUIGalway 3-16 DIT 1-15
Fresh from winning the Division 3 league last season and now in division 2 the home side were ultimately comfortable winners over visitors DIT in dangan today. 13 a side was the order of the day as DIT were shortstaffed and very quickly NUIGalway were into their stride and led (1-11) to (0-5) at the interval with Kevin Lee, Offaly star Conor Kearney and Belfast boy Naoise to the fore with Shane Dooley a welcome returnee and capable midfielder pulling the strings at midfield.
As the second half matured the astute management gave all the panel a run and DIT rallied hard to bring the deficit back to four before a late burst secured the win. The goal scorers were Nathan O Malley, Shane Sheridgan and Jonathan Griffey whose pace caused endless problems for DIT when introduced. Bigger tests lie ahead for this most relaxed bunch of athletes.

Senior Camogie League rd 1:
UL………6-10 NUIGALWAY……2-2

The NUIGalway Camogie team’s first match of the season couldn’t have been played in worse conditions than in the midst of the storm seen on Monday. Despite the adverse weather conditions, an impressive number travelled to Ardrahan to take on camogie giants UL.
UL, true to form, burst onto the scoreboard with two unstoppable goals in the first 5 minutes, aided by the ferocious wind at their backs. This failed to rattle the NUIG women, who regrouped and worked together to keep the fast, physical team out. The backs were dedicated to every ball, and UL had to work for every score. It took NUIG longer to get on the scoreboard, but they did it in fine style with Clodagh Quirke receiving an excellent pass from Ailish Reilly to finish in the back of the net after 13 minutes.
Unfortunately UL were quick to answer with a goal of their own a minute later, and despite being forced into overcarrying thanks to continuous hassling across the pitch, UL were unstoppable. A super point from Orlaith Duggan and a joint save from Sinéad Collins, whose puckouts were powerful even against the wind, and Siobhán Coen, who remained steady in corner back and when moved to full back, gave the team a lift before half time, but the visitors left the half leading 3-6 to 1-1.
With the wind at their backs, NUIG hoped to narrow the gap, but two UL goals in quick succession put them on the back foot. Despite this, NUIG kept fighting. There were some excellent turnovers, with some balls being snatched from the air, and some good clearances. Orla Duggan and Niamh McGrath worked well in midfield and made great catches. Ailish Reilly worked tirelessly in the forwards, adding a placed point and a super goal to the scoresheet. Despite the determination of the backs and goalie, UL were simply too powerful, adding a further 3-4 to their final tally. The match was over as a serious but NUIG kept playing to the end, and can expect to see very different results in later matches. Best for the college girls included the full back trio of Sinead Coen, Stephanie Kenny and the dynamic Sarah Fenton. Hard earned draw for the second string of the college who came from behind to earn a share of the spoils with GMIT's first string in Carnmore. In a strong team effort stand out displays from Ronan Burke in the second half, Shane Byrne at wing and then centre back, Joe Henry in the last quarter, Dan Cunnane, Stephen Cleary until having to retire injured, Michael Burke in goal and top scorer Colin Vaughan who finished the game with 3-4 secured the valuable draw.
